Pedaling Through the Pandemic

We have enjoyed many spring and summer occasions cycling with the Free Wheel North charity. So when they recently asked us to raise awareness of their fundraising event we were looking at ways to support them.

We were keen to involve Weekday Wow Factor participants in the cycling challenge in February #FWNCycling21 as they all showed interest.

The idea was to adapt this activity so we could take part as a group using Zoom from our living rooms. During our research, we came across pedal exercisers and spoke to some participants who have used this for many years and spoke to some physiotherapists about this activity. We carried out our Risk Assessment and got consent from participants to trial this activity.

We were excited and have been coming together over the last few weeks to pedal and chat together. This week we plan to virtually cycle along the Glasgow Canal. This is a childhood memory some of our participants hold.

So far our participants have shared memories of cycling and others had stated this was a missed opportunity in their childhood that they were fulfilling now.  We are pedalling according to our individual abilities and are all going at our own pace.

We recommend you check with your medical doctor when starting any new exercise if it’s safe for you to be involved. We also advise going at your own pace and taking your own abilities into consideration, building fitness to gradually avoid any injuries.
